Red Hot Chili Peppers Californication

75 Essential Albums – #10 RedHot Chili Peppers – Californication

After over six weeks of providing a rundown of 65 albums that I believe everyone should own we come to the final 10.  In the days between now and Xmas I will give a run down of my personal take on the top 10 albums ever released.  Hopefully I have given you some thoughts as to new albums to check out and I hope that the final 10 will have you rewriting your christmas lists and picking up a few of these brilliant albums.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Californication

Everyone should own at least one album by The Red Hot Chili Peppers.  My personal favourite is  Californication but there are a number of albums in their back catalogue that are worthy of inclusion. For a band that have been around for 30 years the Chili Peppers have not exactly been prolific averaging just one album every three years.

Released in 1999 Californication is the seventh studio album by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It was the album that marked the return of John Frusciante, to replace Dave Navarro as the band’s guitarist. Frusciante’s return marked a total change in the Chili Peppers sound.  The album is full of sexual innuendo and touches on lust, death, suicide, and drugs.  Selling over 15m copies worldwide Californication was the Chili Peppers most successful album.

Reviewing the album for the BBC in 2009 Dennis O’Dell said:

“On the surface filled with the usual punk funk, the band had now matured enough to make it sound more convincing. Keidis’ voice, ravaged by age and excess, now emerged as a mighty instrument, while Frusciante’s guitar held far more subtle nuance.

The funky rock feel and the top class musicianship of the album is balanced by some truly dreadful lyrics in places, Pitchfork’s Brent DiCrescenzo said:

“The sincere, hook- laden, mellow jams of “Scar Tissue,” “Otherside,” and “Road Trippin'” more than make up for whatever knuckle- dragging Kiedis executes. That the Chili Peppers even gave us a single you can actually tolerate on the radio should be heralded”.

For me the creativity of Californication is the way it fuses Rock with Funk and Rap to create a totally unique sound.  In many ways this album is what confirmed the Chili Peppers as a world class rock band.  It most certainly changed the bands direction and cemented their place in rock history.  the album contains at least 6 Chili Peppers classic tracks in Parallel Universe, Scar Tissue, Otherside, Californication, This Velvet Glove and Road Trippin.  Despite a few lyrical flaws it is a quite brilliant classic rock album.

About The Sound of Summer

Hi, I am Alan. I live in Broadstone, Dorset with my wife, Shirley, my son, Ryan and two dogs called Bailey and Jasper. I have recently retired after working in the Armed Forces and in Public Service since 1977 so I now have a bit more time to do the things I love. Music is a huge part of my life and always has been. I have a broad taste in music and can find something to enjoy in most styles of music. I have always been attracted to music which has something to say, is outside the mainstream and is perhaps a bit rebellious. I guess my early influences were late 1970's Punk and new wave bands, especially those who came out of Northern Ireland where I grew up. I loved Stiff Little Fingers, The Undertones, Rudi, Starjets etc but also bands like The Ramones, The Clash, The Jam and so on. I like singer songwriters including Van Morrison, Springsteen, Neil Young & Bob Dylan and in recent years I have become more interested in folk and acoustic music but I also love the sort of high drive energetic Folk/Punk music delivered by bands like The Levellers, Leatherat, Ferocious Dog and many others who frequent the UK Festival scene. I have long since lost the desire to spend my holidays laying around in the sun and these days am much more likely to be found in a muddy field somewhere in the UK during the festival season.

This was my favorite Chili Peppers album, as well. Most people take the purist route and go with one of the older albums, but I loved this one. Savior is probably my favorite song.

    Great post:)
