Defeater: Download Festival - photo review

Defeater: Download Festival – photo review

Defeater are a melodic hardcore punk band hailing form Boston Massachusetts.  Over the course of last weekends Download Festival they were another of those unsung bands that Download Festival curator Andy Copping seems so good at digging out.

One of the things that attracts me to punk and hardcore is the fact that, as a sweeping generalisation, the bands tend to be talking about things that matter.  The oppression of the working class, exploitation and demonisation of the poor and political inequality are all things that are ripe fodder for hardcore bands song writing.  So it proves with Defeater.

Songs about struggling war veterans, alcohol and drug abuse and poverty are all subjected to Derek Archambault’s rasping vocal during their short set.  The energy and anger that is such an integral part bands like Defeater are the perfect antidote to the seemingly never ending tirade of bland, safe, “vanilla” pop music that we are subjected to on our radio’s on a daily basis.

Thankfully, outside of the mainstream, there is plenty of good music around to catch our attention when we make the effort to dig it out.  Long may bands like Defeater surprise us.

These photographs were taken during defeaters set at Download.  If you don’t know the band make the effort to check them it.  It is well worth the effort.

Defeater are on the internet here, on Facebook and they tweet as @Defeater
