WICKHAM FESTIVAL WINS TOP AWARD

Regular readers will be aware that I was extremely impressed with this years Wickham festival. This friendly little festival punches well above it’s weight in terms of the quality of the line-up it puts on year after year and it looks like it isn’t just me who thinks so.

The Wickham Festival has been voted the best event of its kind in the country.

Wickham has been named the Best Festival (Capacity under 15,000) at the prestigious Live UK Music Business Awards.

They beat off strong competition from Dorset’s End of the Road and the Slam Dunk Festival in Leeds to claim the crown.

The announcement was made at the gala awards evening in London last night (October 15) and is a fitting reward for the hugely successful event staged at Wickham in August when record crowds flocked to the picturesque site to see the likes of the Proclaimers, 10cc, Billy Bragg and many more.

Organiser Peter Chegwyn said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won, especially given the quality of the opposition.

“We were thrilled just to be nominated for this coveted award and then to make the top three… but to come out on top is a fantastic achievement.:”

Chegwyn added: “The success in not just down to our staff and the artists but also to the fans who have fallen in love with the Wickham Festival so it is only right we share our success with them. Until the end of October, anyone booking an adult weekend ticket for next year can get a £50 discount.

About The Sound of Summer

Hi, I am Alan. I live in Broadstone, Dorset with my wife, Shirley, my son, Ryan and two dogs called Bailey and Jasper. I have recently retired after working in the Armed Forces and in Public Service since 1977 so I now have a bit more time to do the things I love. Music is a huge part of my life and always has been. I have a broad taste in music and can find something to enjoy in most styles of music. I have always been attracted to music which has something to say, is outside the mainstream and is perhaps a bit rebellious. I guess my early influences were late 1970's Punk and new wave bands, especially those who came out of Northern Ireland where I grew up. I loved Stiff Little Fingers, The Undertones, Rudi, Starjets etc but also bands like The Ramones, The Clash, The Jam and so on. I like singer songwriters including Van Morrison, Springsteen, Neil Young & Bob Dylan and in recent years I have become more interested in folk and acoustic music but I also love the sort of high drive energetic Folk/Punk music delivered by bands like The Levellers, Leatherat, Ferocious Dog and many others who frequent the UK Festival scene. I have long since lost the desire to spend my holidays laying around in the sun and these days am much more likely to be found in a muddy field somewhere in the UK during the festival season.
