Happy Thanksgiving To All My U.S. Friends

As a Brit I don’t know a lot about the U.S. tradition of thanksgiving, it’s not something we do here in the UK.

I do know that it is a huge family occasion in the USA.  I wish you all well, have a wonderful day with your family and know that here in the UK I will be giving thanks to all of the wonderful people I have met from the far side of the pond.

As a cynical American I can tell you that Thanksgiving is marketed as a day to share with family and friends the gratitude one feels for all one has.

In reality Thanksgiving is a holiday that marks the official start of the Christmas shopping season. This evening and tomorrow stores will run crazy sales, and tons of people will merge onto said stores and fight over the cheap stuff. Then every week from now until Christmas is non-stop sales and holiday songs.

I must confess that the whole Xmas thing leaves me cold. It is now just an excuse for excess and waste.

We have opted out of Xmas this year. We will buy a few small gifts for my son and his girlfriend who are coming away with us for a week in the sun 🙂 You couldn’t have a better Xmas present 🙂
