How A Middle Aged Punk Rocker Ends Up 1D Obsessed

In recent weeks I have gained a huge number of followers and attention from fans of One Direction because I write articles about them for news outlet Inquisitr.  A huge number of people have asked me my views on a lot of issues connected with the band and as I can’t answer everyone personally this post is and attempt to answer those questions.

Let me explain a little bit about how I arrived where I am now.  I retired from work a couple of years back on the grounds of ill health.  I had been suffering badly from depression.  I began writing to give myself a creative outlet and to fill my time.  I have been a lifelong music nut.  I still can’t walk past a record shop and I have a CD collection of around 10,000 discs.

As a result it was a no-brainer that I would write about music.  After a short time I was invited to write for a couple of music outlets and that eventually led to me writing for Inquisitr.

Inquisitr is what is known as a news aggregation service.  This means that it reports trending news based on what people are searching for on Google, Yahoo and Bing.  When I started out with Inquisitr around 13-months ago I noticed quickly that there was a lot of interest in stories about One Direction and pop culture in general and that is where most of my stories are drawn from.  In the beginning I wrote pretty much what the other outlets were covering whether that was positive or negative.

I confess that being a punk and metal fan I didn’t know a huge amount about One Direction.  I detest reality TV and Simon Cowell so I have never watched X-Factor or the like.  In all honesty I swallowed the line that One Direction was music for boy-band obsessed 12-year-old girls.

This all changed in October 2015.  I had written a couple of articles based on what Dan Wootton had said in the Sun.  As a result I was contacted by a number of 1D fans who challenged what I had written in a very nice, calm and measured way.  I had interesting conversations with them and promised that if they had angles that they thought I should research I would do so.

They asked me to look into a number of things and as promised I began to look deeply into the back story.  I was horrified by what I found.  What was immediately apparent was the degree of manipulation of the image the various members of One Direction were subject to.  The links between Anne Marie Samson and the Sun and all of the things that the more analytical fans have known for years fascinated and appalled me.

As a result of all my research I totally changed my outlook.  As time went on I became aware of the amazing work that 1D fans do for charity and how unfairly fans were represented in the media.  My experience was very different to the media portrayal.  I found that I admired the efforts that 1D fans went to in supporting the boys in all aspects of their lives.

I am particularly disgusted by the treatment Louis Tomlinson has had in some sections of the media so I set out to provide some balance by calling out lazy reporting by other outlets, challenging lies and reporting the positive stories.

This week I gained a huge number of new followers after some fans revealed that Louis’ mom, Johanna Deakin was following me on Twitter.  She even retweeted one of my articles after I said that I would believe that she approved of my articles when she retweeted them.  Shortly afterwards she did!

The question that most people ask me is whether or not I am a “Larry”meaning do I think Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson are a couple?

The genuine truth is that I don’t know.  That said a lot of the reported 1D “girlfriend” stories are so transparently false that it is hard to believe that anyone falls for it.  Do I believe in Lounielle?  Not for one second.  Do I believe in Hendall?  Not for one second.

Based on what I have read I believe Louis is probably gay and I think Harry is probably bi-sexual.  My guess is that they either have or had a relationship but in all honesty I don’t really care about their sexuality all that much.  I am of the view that “some people are gay, get over it.” What I do care about is the fact that both the boys and the fans are being manipulated to preserve the image and the 1D brand.

If Larry is real then the boys should be able to come out and show who they really are.  The vast majority of fans will accept them no matter what.

My intention is to keep digging for the truth whatever that may be.  Where I find positive stories I will report them.  I hope 1D fans will continue to enjoy my work even if I write something they disagree with.  I can’t promise that every story will be a positive one or that every one will be liked by fans.  I can’t promise that I won’t be clumsy with my words on occasion.

What I can promise is that I will write every story with an open mind.  I will look beyond the headline and where possible I will get to the truth of the matter.

I hope that explains where I am coming from and where I am now.  I’m happy to answer any questions in the comments below.

About The Sound of Summer

Hi, I am Alan. I live in Broadstone, Dorset with my wife, Shirley, my son, Ryan and two dogs called Bailey and Jasper. I have recently retired after working in the Armed Forces and in Public Service since 1977 so I now have a bit more time to do the things I love. Music is a huge part of my life and always has been. I have a broad taste in music and can find something to enjoy in most styles of music. I have always been attracted to music which has something to say, is outside the mainstream and is perhaps a bit rebellious. I guess my early influences were late 1970's Punk and new wave bands, especially those who came out of Northern Ireland where I grew up. I loved Stiff Little Fingers, The Undertones, Rudi, Starjets etc but also bands like The Ramones, The Clash, The Jam and so on. I like singer songwriters including Van Morrison, Springsteen, Neil Young & Bob Dylan and in recent years I have become more interested in folk and acoustic music but I also love the sort of high drive energetic Folk/Punk music delivered by bands like The Levellers, Leatherat, Ferocious Dog and many others who frequent the UK Festival scene. I have long since lost the desire to spend my holidays laying around in the sun and these days am much more likely to be found in a muddy field somewhere in the UK during the festival season.

Thank you for your honesty & open-mindedness. It’s hard to believe that after being a huge fan of Duran Duran as a teen that I would ever love another band again – especially when my kids were teenagers . I’m a 47 year old woman & first became a One Direction fan at the end of 2012 to try to “bond” with my youngest daughter (then 13.) Ironically, I’m still a big fan, but she has since “moved on.” It seems almost cliche to say that they have helped me through some of the worst times of my life, but they have in a way. Focusing on the band provided an escape for me from my divorce after more than 20 years of marriage. I have my own opinions about the band and their management, but it is apparent that some things don’t add up. It will be interesting to see what we will learn in the coming years about the true stories of these very talented young men.

Hi Alan, I have been a huge fan of your 1D articles before and I think we get even manipulated in Larry things ( bakery in London, Interview of Ben’s father about Harry) after Hendall desaster.. Like in old Rome. Panem et circenses.. My Intention is to find out if I still can trust in my intellect and common sense. I’m sure you help us finding some kind of truth

      Hello Alan!
Thank GOD for you! I, too, am a middle-aged (age 51 here)! Directioner, and I also suffer from depression and anxiety — since 1994. I’m a divorced woman, no kids, and I live and breathe by this fandom because it’s just about the only thing left that gives me joy and guarantees a laugh once a day (from watching their old videos, etc. etc.)

I’m also a writer by trade — got a BA in English in 1985, starting working in 1986 and went full-speed-ahead until I finally quit the rat race and went freelance as an editor in 2008. Yet over and over throughout the years, as it is wont to do, depression reared its ugly head and rendered me unable to reach any real motivation or creativity, so I do very little real “work” anymore.

I became interested in this group when Zayn quit, I think — not quite sure, but I clearly remember taking interest in that because he had become so nearly emaciated and looked stressed beyond belief, so I wondered, “What’s going on with that group? Something is really wrong here,” and looked into it — and I’ve never looked back.

I even got my 53-year-old bf (now ex-bf) interested, and I didn’t say a word about or allude to Larry whatsoever: He picked it up himself and said, “Are those two involved?” to which I blithely replied, “Oh, that’s what people say; I really don’t know,” though of course, it was OBVIOUS to me.

Here’s why it’s obvious Larry is real to me: When I watch them, either in live interviews or in these videos, I see and feel love. I’ve been married twice, and I’ve been blessed to have loved two other men in my life, and I know what that looks like, feels like, and I just know it when I see it. Harry and Louis exhibit it so much that it’s almost visceral; it’s an almost palpable sensation.

You know that feeling when your heart “breaks” with happiness? I’m not a very religious person, but I’m highly spiritual and do believe in God, and when I pray, sometimes my heart “breaks,” in the sense that I feel joy / a connection to something beyond myself, something divine, and I KNOW someone, somewhere is listening to me with great benevolence. THAT is how I feel when I watch, listen to, or just observe Harry and Louis. I know what I feel is right, because this is coming from a very primal, instinctive part of my brain. Our instincts do NOT lie.

I’m very disappointed and upset at the way management has handled this entire arrangement. I believe they want to keep Larry alive but “a secret” because it sells. Right now, I’m spending time and energy (which translates to money in the larger scheme of things) devoting a large part of my life to them. I bought MITAM on pre-sale. This “closeted gay” thing; are they or aren’t they?” SELLS. We’re all basically puppets of their infernally run management, just as the guys are. None of the others are allowed to comment, either, it seems — not a peep from Liam or Niall, and that’s just not like them at ALL.

I feel like their mother, and I want them to be happy, even if it means they aren’t “together.” But Harry was beaming in a BLUE shirt yesterday (blue for boy:) just 30 minutes or so away from where Louis was purposely photographed looking very unhappy (likely trotted out by his PR team) wearing a hospital bracelet in front of SunglassHut.

I think he WAS tired; I think he was up with all the baby commotion, and that they baby was born, and that it is possibly his. I believe he may be facing a custody battle or a paternity test, or he may be still under the control of Modest!, who will not “allow” him to celebrate this or speak about it openly and honestly. Even though I’m new to the fandom, I see what a thick veil of secrecy they’ve been under for more than five years, and it’s frustrating and unfair.

But the bright light of Harry’s smile (the likes of which I haven’t seen in a long time) yesterday, out in the sun with Anne, wearing that BLUE shirt, made me think, “If Harry’s okay, all is good in the world.”

Alan, thank you again for your words, for your belief, and most of all, for your kindness.

(I don’t have have twitter or any social media because I’m truly a complete technology dunce; just wanted to stop in and say my piece!)

Hey Alan ! Loved the recent article throwing light on Louis Tomlinson’s charity work ! I wanted to know if you were aware of the Rainbow Bears ? If you have the time, I’d love to know your personal opinion on the Bears. Thanks!

Bravo! What an interesting read! I almost never comment on articles I read. But after reading some of the nasty comments, I feel compelled to share my opinion. I do not see anywhere in your article where you say you are a larry shipper or proclaim that larry is real. So the negative comments saying that you have been brainwashed by the larries just confuse me. Yes, you may lean a little to the left of center as far as larry is concerned, but that is absolutely your right to share your personal opinion on your personal post on your personal website. So here’s my two cents, for what it’s worth 🙂
So let’s not call this larry or antis since that seems to be a hot button topic within the fandom. Lets refer to 1D as apples. Within the apple family, there are many different types of apples. While I may love Granny Smith apples, someone else may not care for them. They may love Red Delicious apples while I despise them. I do not waste my breath trying to make someone who doesn’t like Granny Smith apples to like them. And vice versa..Red Delicious apple shippers aren’t going to make me switch my favorite apple and go to the dark Red Delicious side! And that’s okay! I respect their opinions and beliefs and expect the same in return. Because at the end of the day, we all just really really love apples…apples that make really great music!

HI! Thank you so much for this article. I am also a new 1D fan… I am 43 years old, married , and have a 4 year old son. I am glad I am not alone!
I just really started getting into them around Sept-Oct 2015. Now I am fully obsessed. I too, do not care if anyone is gay or straight. BUT…I do see things as well, after watching so many interviews..etc. I would hope they can express themselves freely in the near future. I adore these guys.. They were just 5 regular guys looking for a break…and look at them now! I am sorry I didn’t give them a chance sooner.

Hey Renee, I think it’s the whole X-factor, manufactured pop thing that puts people off.

The truth is that music should have no boundaries or borders. We should accept it for bringing joy into our lives

Alan, thank you for your post, you haven’t discover anything new tho, some fans have been talking about the closet fot years. But some of us doesn’t have the priviledge to be a highly educated middle age white man that can post something in the media and be listened. That is because the fandom is treated in a very mysoginist way. Were we are ridiculed all as a bunch of deluded and stupid teenagers with conspiracy theories. (Even when there is nothing to be ashame of being a female teenager, but society says that 1D is shameful because it is what teenagers like)
But, as you can see, we are a very heterogenous fandom, of different genders and sexualities, different ages from kids to midle age adults. Some are the het girls, who believes everything that is printed, others believes that Zayn and Liam are a closeted couple too, some are anti-larries and they hate us, some are non-larries pro-lgbt right who don’t want to ‘force’ a sexuality in the boys. And some of us truly believe that H&L are in a relationship (I have seen every fuckin interview, interaction during concerts, receipts from people who have seen them together, etc.) I know that because of the closet they can’t interact in public, but I think that H&L searched for the holes in their contract and they express trough the lyrics of their songs (like home, strong, they don’t know about us, etc.), their bodies (matching tattoos), they even learned sign language! And now with the Rainbow bondage bear. I think that the baby is a stunt, lounielle, hendall, and Zigi are stunt for promo. Haylor was too. I have seen the context of them all and it is so obvious that they are stage. If someone wants proof they have to open their eyes. There is a larry thesaurus somewhere and I also recommend to see the freddyismyqueen vids in youtube. I am a social anthropologist that have been doing an ethnography of this fandom for more than 3 years and I think that I have seen it all.

Nice blog/article. Actually, there is only like 1 person in the fandom who thinks Hendall and Louinelle are real. These ‘dates’ are not presented as real. They don’t even try. We get a million pics of the couples all doing the same things – very unnatural. The yacht was a little different, but it looked liked both Harry and Kendall were screaming ‘look at this fake job’ with every move they made for the pictures. So anyway, over time, mgmt seems to want to please the various factions in the fan base; it was heavy Larry in Nov/Dec and now it’s het/anti January and unless things change, it will just go back and forth. As for the baby, I’ve always kind of expected one to appear on the horizon. Having been a fan for 5 years, I recall lots of times Harry and Louis in particular saying they wanted a baby (individually) and then we got all the stomach balloons by Harry (at times blown up by Louis), so when we had the early baby announcement in May (before it was made official in July) I wasn’t very surprised and while many denied it as true (and still do), I have always figured it is the baby one or both of them have claimed to always want. 1D Management has always been strange and manipulative, but I think things get really confusing when they have to deal with circumstances created by the members of the band themselves. As a fan, I could do with a lot less dissimulation by the band, but in truth, as long as they continue to pump out good tunes, I’m good. The off stage antics serve to entertain between albums – right now that’s going to call for a good number of them cuz we have like a year and a half or so before the next one is released. I’m hoping they are congregating in LA to knock out a History video – that would be cool.

Hi thanks for an interesting read. A very fresh perspective. I’m slightly older too, a 28 year old male fan who hasn’t ever been an avid listener to their music, not until their last album ‘MITAM’. Really impressive album with a lot of indie/soft rock influences, a welcome change from the pop music they had made in some of their earlier albums. I don’t follow the bands personal lives, i did do some research on this ‘Larry’ thing that i’ve heard about last month. I will say that i don’t care about their sexualities…but Louis and Harry. Though their interaction is sparse nowadays and they interact a lot less than with each other than their other band members, you cannot ignore that look of love in their eyes when they look at each other. There is something there- what i do not know, but something that perhaps is more than just a friendship? Maybe i’m wrong totally wrong but at any rate it’s weird that they can’t be as open with their relationship as they used to in their earlier days. Its also very odd seeing as since 2014 i’ve seen the dailymail and sun print articles suggesting that Harry and Louis hate each other! The whole baby situation is strange too- and the fact his team isn’t milking the news. They revel in publicity (as you can tell by how heavily the boys relationships with women are documented) and imagine the first 1D baby and the glossy promo pieces they could generate with this pregnancy. Shopping for cute clothes, decorating the baby’s room, Louis reading parenting books, dedicating the band’s new single to the baby. The bands predominantly female fanbase would love it, and yet we have nothing but radio silence. Perhaps he just wants privacy for him and the mother of his child, but when the baby has been mentioned to him in interviews he seems incredibly annoyed and even uncomfortable by it? A lot of people have taken to calling him a ‘deadbeat father’ already and ‘disgraceful’ branding him all kinds of vile names because it appears to the general public that he has got a girl pregnant while embarking on a relationship with the other. What do you think is going on there, i’m sure i can’t be the only one who finds it incredibly confusing??!? At any rate, its not my business to pry into their sexualities but i hope people realise that gay/bisexual men can still have children- a good friend of mine came out as gay last year but prior to that he was married with two children. So there’s that. I previously shunned the idea that a management company could force two friends to stop interacting with each other just for the sake of ‘gay rumours’, but i’m not sure now… I hope Louis mother gets to read this article too, a welcome change from all the negativity he’s received as of late.

      Hey,
Thanks for dropping in and checking out the article and for your own thoughts.
I agree about the baby and the total news blackout and the wealth of relationship stories whilst the baby story is largely ignored unless it is to paint Louis in a poor light.
It is very odd indeed. Still with Briana “due” this month the story must surely be in its end game now

You know I really don’t know what to think. I have seen so much stuff that allegedly comes from Briana’s family and the overall total lack of official news that my head is in a spin with it all.

I don’t know whether to think that the story is correct, whether it’s a PR stunt gone badly awry or if there is a baby and it isn’t his. I just don’t have a clue

I love your comment from start to finish 🙂 Hey, welcome to the rabbit hole. You should go back and listen to Midnight Memories and Four as well – there’s a LOT of great music on those two albums written by the boys themselves. And a lot of it speaks to those of us who believe Harry and Louis are in a relationship (Happily, Strong etc). You’re so right, they DO look at each other with love. To say they hate each other is beyond ridiculous. I feel so so sad for Louis because he has proven over and over again what a family man he is, for anyone to believe he would be a deadbeat dad is so unfair!

i am an older fan as yourself, and would like to thank you for this article!!! I am pretty unphased by this Larry Stylinson thing. I mean obviously certain truths may be embellished, but this group of fans that make up outlandish theories aren’t some secret hidden coven they are just active on tumblr, sharing their own views. I formed my own opinions after watching a few one direction interviews, and came to the conclusion that something is quite strange. Funny how louis and harry two best friends, suddenly stopped interacting in their interviews after 2013. There always seems to be an awkwardness about them, not an awkwardness like two friends who’ve fallen out but as if there is an unspoken rule that they can’t communicate. I don’t know, let me not dwell on that or their sexualities, but i find it baffling that every time one of them is seen with a girl we are inundated with hundreds of High quality pictures- this has happened since harry styles dated taylor swift in 2012. All weird. I don’t pretend to understand the details of the music industry, but i find it a shame that the portrayal of Louis tomlinson in the media has been overwhelmingly negative. I’m not quite sure why this is, but many seem to have a poor perception of him- an image i think his label has helped to create? I am rambling a bit here and it is late, but i do think there is something going on within the band, something we aren’t being told. I think sometimes the fans (whom are all relatively young) lap up what the media tells them, but i am not buying it. For one, I’m glad you took an open approach when writing this article it was a refreshing take.

I agree with most of what you say. The 1D world is a very strange one. If we had social media when the beatles were around I expect that their fandom would have been very similar.

I don’t agree that 1D fans are all yound however. Huge numbers of people I talk to are adults with teenage children themselves. Of course 1D was originally pitched to 12-year-old girls but both they and their fan base have matured considerably since then.

The whole thing is complex and hugely engrossing. I watch and write with interest

I must say, your article was refreshing indeed. Prior to 2013, I had heard of 1D (I have a teenage daughter), but could not have given their names if called upon to do so. That state of consciousness changed when my generous sister bought a ticket to a 1D concert at the Staples center. My daughter became determined to see to it that I not only learned all their names, most songs, recognition of each voice separately. She was thorough. She was successful. In the early process, she made brief mention of “dark larries”. She explained what they are, then the subject moved on. To say that she enjoyed the concert, which she attended with her aunt, is an understatement. She returned home floating 3 feet off of the ground. Life pretty much returned to normal…till once again, “larries” came up in conversation. I quietly took it upon myself to do some research. I read all that I could get my hands on, watched hours of videos, I paying particular attention to all interactions between Louis and Harry. At the end of it, I sat my daughter down and informed her that I am certain that there is an amazing relationship between the two. Also, that they are deeply in love. What has been done to them in the name of sales is horrific.
I should also say, that while I do enjoy a few of their earlier songs, the past 3 albums have shown exponential growth and an amazing gift for songwriting amongst all of them. Made in the AM is a stellar effort and I couldn’t be happier for them. I very much hope that they will soon be able to live and love freely. They are all amazing young men who have had to grow up in the public eye and have done very well indeed. I can’t wait to see what comes next!

Hi Kim, thanks for dropping in.
I agree with you that the songwriting has matured and taken a new turn as 1D have matured. There are some great songs on MITAM.

It seems the more you read about their management, PR and Syco the more murky the picture looks. There are some really disturbing things going on.

It seems like everything these guys say has to come from a script or they have to keep their mouths shut.

Thanks for being open minded and staying curious! The 1D Family really appreciates your work, even if you write about an opinion of yours we don’t share. Everyone has a different side of view and we totally respect that, and because you don’t get offensive towards us as a fanbase, we kind of like you 😉 It’s actually a bit hard to be a “Directioner”, because you will always get labelled as a freak, childish and crazy, I mean, you fancy a boygroup, how could you.

We should not assume their sexualities that means we should not assume if theyre gay or straight. You can ship Larry or Narry or whatever you want just being respectful. I personally don’t believe in the baby thing or in their new girlfriends. I think its ok to have a different opinion. Just because i love them does not mean i’m gonna believe what media says, or their management want me to believe about them. I just want them to be happy, all of them.

Hi Alan! First of all just wanted to say that I really enjoyed this article. Contrary to some people’s beliefs I think you do have a very open mind, there are few that will not choose one side or other over all this without proper research, so well done.
When you say that you don’t care either way if they are gay, I feel that a lot of people believe that us Larries are trying to “force” Louis and Harry into a sexuality or something which honestly makes no sense to me.
I was not sucked into this group, I was in a very dark place a few months back, (have been for several years, I’ve been struggling with depression, and anxiety,) anyways I started listening to one direction’s music again, after taking a couple years break from the fandom. This wasn’t a break on purpose I just had other interests.
I found videos of them on the x factor and watched their whole journey the whole way through. I thought that Louis and Harry’s relationship was adorable and continued to watch videos of the two of them. I love the way they smile at each other, stare at each other and laugh together. It makes me happier more than anything else besides my music. They definitely got me out of a very deep rut and I am continually thankful for their relationship everyday, whatever it might be.
I do not insist that they are together, I have shared with my family members and though they would not readily admit it, they have later confessed they share my views on the subject.
I found it very odd to learn that they no longer interacted at all. A relationship like that does not just disappear and hearing articles that they now hated each other, I was quite taken aback. But I continued to research and found more current footage of them and realized there is no way in hell that they hate each other. They are still very close I am sure, again in whatever type of relationship they may have, but there is some reason that they are no longer showing that to the public. Then a couple months ago they began to interact again and Harry looked happier than I had seen him look for years honestly. They interact with the same joyful smiles and laughter that they shared on the x factor and for several years after.
I agree that they were made to stop interacting for the brand image. I just can’t imagine that they would be forced to stop interacting if there was nothing to hide. I would think they could just come and deny it to the public on camera and be done with. But they have continually avoided the question except for one time when harry said “no” in response to being asked, “so theres nothing going on between you and louis?”. He cried after that interview. There’s footage.
Whatever their relationship may be, I find it completely wrong that they have to hide it away. I know I would still support them 100% if they were to be out and I know that most of their fans would too.
(In case I haven’t made this clear, sorry I talk too much I know, I believe they are in love, just watching the way they stare at each other and how they are happiest when they are together. I could be completely wrong though but either way, they smile like nothing else matters when they are by each other’s side. Best friends or more, it shouldn’t be hidden away.)
Again, sorry for such a long response I just really needed to get that out of my system.

Is there anyway I could talk with you further on the subject of one direction and their management?
    Please let me know.
    Thank you 🙂

Alan, I am also an older 1D fan (approaching 40 quicker than I’d like 😉) and I just want you to know how much I appreciate your candor and support of both our boys and the 1D fandom. Thank you so much for your open mind and willingness to look beneath & beyond the bullsh*t manufactured image of our 1D boys. Thank you for all the ways you’ve defended Louis. It’s been so refreshing to read your articles and to see you shining a light on many of the positive sides of our boys and fandom (and what both have accomplished), rather than the constant mud-slinging and contempt both our boys and fandom face in other media sources. So this is basically one giant Thank You😊

A very interesting read. To be honest, i’m 22 years old and have never taken an interest in one direction and have upon occasion labelled them as ‘manufactured cr**’. I first heard of this Larry stylinson stuff around Mid-2015 and after doing some research on it, dismissed it as mere fan conspiracy; after all teenagers are bored 90% of the time. Nevertheless, it wasn’t until November i watched a few One direction interviews. As someone who is a psychology major and as someone who has also done extensive research into body language, it was clear to me that the relationship between Harry and Louis infringed and crossed the boundaries of a mere platonic ‘bromance’. I could go on for days about this, but i won’t, lol. It’s not me to pry into the nature of their personal lives or sexualities, but i do think the two of them have something there between them, or at the very least had. What bothers me, is how their team is orchestrating some of the most transparently obvious PR stunts that i have ever seen!
And to a degree, i almost can see their reasoning for doing so. Harry, in particular for many years has been viewed as ‘the face of the brand’. He is a ‘teenage heart-throb’ and young girls everywhere have grown up romanticising this carefully cultivated image of him. I believe management fears that them revealing their actual sexualities may have a detrimental impact on the band success, and inevitably ruin the one direction brand. It is interesting that Harry himself has said in numerous interviews that he hates being labelled as a ‘womaniser’ but that is the very nature of the image that his team has built for him….
I have forever dismissed the idea that a record label or a management team is that dictatorial and repressive, but after conducting my own research, i think there is a lot more to this than meets the eye. Former member Zayn malik has recently provided a silver of insight into just how one direction is being managed in his recent interview with Billboard magazine. His quote ‘If fans new how one direction is being run- what would they think?’ This makes me believe there is far more to this band that meets the eye. If management has gone to such extreme lengths to disguise louis and harrys sexuality/the nature of their relationship, then its truly sad how the fans have been lied to for over 5 years, and even sadder just what these boys have had to endure.

Yes! Exactly. You reach many of the same conclusions I have. I really don’t care about their sexuality one way to the other. Thats up to them.

These guys were signed by Simon Cowell when they were 16 – 18 years old and starstruck. they would have signed anything.

The Sony e-mail leaks, Malik’s comments and a host of other stuff shows that they have been branded to fit an image and to appeal to a particular demographic. 1D have now outgrown that and as a result there is a struggle for control.

I watch with interest to see how it develops

        Likewise i do too!
Sadly, i don’t think we will get the truth any time soon. I doubt malik is able to divulge too much regarding what went on in One Direction (I’m sure he’s signed a NDA or something of a similar nature) and despite the boys contract expiring in March, i’m sure there are certain things they won’t be able to disclose until much further down the line. All the same it is interesting that people such as yourself, have been able to see through these some of these glaringly obvious PR stunts. Given the fact their fanbase is predominantly made up of teenagers, i can see why some of them are easily manipulated.
I look forward to your next article.

Management has lied but the majority of the fandom didn’t/doesn’t believe it and we’re the ones pointing out all the inconsistencies from the beginning. We want the boys to sign with another management.

    Hi Alan,
I think it’s great that you are open minded on 1D and the Larry issue. I have followed 1D since November 2014. I would just like to know, where do yo do most of your research? Is it mostly on Tumblr? And if so, do you focus only on the Larry side of the fandom. I will admit that the Larries are a big group on Tumblr and overpower the non-larries. I think you should definitely look at the other non-parry blogs. Larries do have a way to present the story in a compelling way with backed up “evidence” but unfortunately, you only get to see 1 side of things. Larries will only use pictures, videos, gif or post that suit to prove Larry. Whenever someone will try to argue another point of view, the person is ridiculed or blocked.

There are so many moments or other explanations that are available out there. So please try and dig in a bit more. Do not focus only on larry blogs.

I absolutely think that the boys and fans are portrayed unfairly in the media. I also think that yes the boys were taken advantage of when the signed their contract. Is 1 or more than 1 member of 1D hiding their sexuality? Probably.

My point is just be very careful, it’s very easy to get wrapped up in the whole conspiracy theory. Everything is a stunt, 1DHQ is the mastermind of all evil preventing H&L from coming out to the world and shackled Louis Tomlinson to a baby stunt and another “rumoured girlfriend” but H&L are strong and are sending signal that they are fighting against all of this.

Honestly if H&L are or were together, then it’s the most compelling story ever but even they would say that the way larries have presented the story is way too embellished. I think things would be a lot more simple than that.

I like that you are able to say hey I might be wrong in my assessment. Most larries will never say or admit that because they are in too deep.

in any case, you said that you are not writing to please a particular audience and that yeah some article may not please the larries so yeah keep up what you do on showing the inaccuracies & misconception on 1D.

If you have time, you should read an article about Benedict Cumberbatch fans http://www.xojane.com/issues/cumberbitches-tried-to-get-me-fired . You will see a lot of resemblance in what is happening in the larry fandom.

Hi and thanks for your comments.

Whilst I do share stuff on Tumblr I don’t really use it much. Posts from here go to Tumblr, Bloglovin and Facebook automatically but Tumblr confuses me and I find it really hard to follow. I don’t think I have ever even logged in to Bloglovin.

As I have tried to say again and again I am open minded about H & L, and that means both sides of the equation. I have never said in an Inquisitr article that “larry is real” though I do try to ask people to consider whether or not it is a possibility.
My main focus is on the terrible way that the 1D boys and fans are portrayed and I will try to keep reporting the positive things that they do

I have to thank you AND apologize. The thank you is obvious, any time a someone vows to report the “truth” I’m there. I studiously avoid most news outlets as I can not stand all the doom and gloom, and false reporting for the sake of sales.

Which leads to my apology. The first article of yours that I retweeted I commented something to the effect of “great article despite the source”. Unfortunately I made an assumption on the basis of the name “Inquisitor” that it was a weekly rag magazine, and as such could not be taken seriously even if I happened to like that particular article.

I could blame my assumption on the fact that I live in Canada and here anything with “inquisitor” or “enquirer” in the title really IS a rag, but in doing so I fell to the same laziness that a lot of those publications are guilty of in their reporting, laziness. I did not research your “Inquisitor” and by not doing so made a very wrong assumption, and for that I am sorry.

I am no fresh faced teen, nor a 12 year old fan girl. I am a 46 year old woman, wife, mother, friend and a lover of all things 1D. I went to college, I work in a University, I am an intelligent human being with two eyes and an analytical brain. It did not take long to start seeing through the 1DHQ agenda for these boys. Larry aside ( and simply by observing the boys actions alone I tend to fall on the side of “seeing is believing”) too much of what is reported and even WORSE allowed to remain unchallenged by their team, is pure fiction. Disturbingly these are hateful, potentially damaging stories that fans know to be false but the general public take at face value.

I could go on for days about how 1D HQ has allowed these boys (yes they are young adults now but seriously, Harry was not even old enough to sign his first contract when they started) to be raked through the much and not stand up for them.

What I really just wanted to say was on behalf of the 1D fandom, young and *cough*, older, THANK YOU for looking for the truth and not perpetuating the lies.

Thank you Sheila. I agree with what you say. I don’t get hung up on peoples views on Inquisitr. I accept that some writers there are brilliant, others not so much. I’m not involved in the business side so perceptions are not my problem. All I can do is to approach my articles with integrity and an open mind.

As you can see from the thread some people are of a view that I don’t do that. I will think about those comments and bear them in mind when I write. Any feedback is welcome as are opinions that run contrary to my own.

The nice thing is that it generates discussion and so long as that discussion is polite and respectful then it’s all good 🙂

What I personally don’t agree with is guessing/speculating their sexuality to the extent that you go into detail with it; meaning the way you said you think Louis is gay and Harry is bisexual. To be honest, I have never been comfortable with saying more than I do think neither of them is straight, though I have no idea what exactly it is they identify as when it comes to sexuality and don’t think it’s any of my business, to be frank. I guess this is because I personally don’t like labels and do not consider myself straight, yet I wouldn’t want people calling me any other sexuality either without me personally telling them I identify as one. Catch my drift? But obviously this is just my opinion and you’re free to say what you think, especially for you never claimed what’s clearly your opinion to be a fact.

What I have learned that I like about you is your open mind and the fact that even though your initial opinion on 1D and us, the fans, wasn’t exactly correct, you’ve since learned and accepted you were, in lack of a better word, tricked into believing what the media (with One Direction’s pr-team behind most of it) wants the general public and fans to believe.

Even though last year was certainly not dancing on flowers and riding a unicorn through a lilac sky as far as being a fan of One Direction goes, I think it brought some good things with it, too (I like to dig out the good things in unfortunate situations, you see), such as a lot of attention to the band, which then stirred up the interest of those willing to dig deeper and challenge their – and I mean no offense – premature opinions not based on facts but on said view they want us to believe. It’s quite great that there are now more mature, enlightened people out there that are aware of the shadiness of it all and know better than to believe everything that’s fed to the public, whether that is the fake relationships, the egregious image of Louis Tomlinson the media is pushing and has been pushing for quite some time now, the baby that was thrown into the mess and is obviously (well, in the opinions of me and many more well-researched fans) fake (as in not Louis’ even if this baby does exist) or any of the other stunts.

I hope I didn’t come off as rude since I certainly didn’t mean to; I do hope I made at least some sense. English isn’t my native language and I’m only eighteen after all; I have a lot to learn yet strong opinions. It’s not always the best mix, I’ll admit, but such is life (a mature conclusion, that, innit).

I’d just like to thank you for keeping an open mind and making sure there are truthful, more researched articles out there too to keep sure there’s some balance in this mess.

I have never and will never say that H & L are gay in my professional writing unless there is some sort of incontrovertible proof.

I want to Thank you for your articles and the research behind those. Also I want to thank you for writing this.
As a One Direction fan I have learned to not trust the things written about them and is hard to not think about the intentions behind the few people that doesn’t follow the common narrative that the press give us about the band.
It feels good to have people on our side that really see the things how we, the fans, see it and are capable to look between the lines and the lies.
I believe Harry and Louis love each other. I feel incapable to say if they are gay or not. Thanks to this fandom I learnt that sexual and romantic orientation of people can be much more than a definition of gay or straight. I believe in freedom and that people have te right to be happy being themselves.

Great article! I’m too a middle age het with kids and after doing research for my own entertainment stumbled accross this image manipulation in 1D. I could not believe it but you just have to reach deeper with an unbiassed mind and boom! The pieces come together and make sense. The lyrics also tell a story. 1D has deeper lyrics than other older acts. All observations converge at this notion that some big relationship was or is being hidden. Please stay with the truth because those bastards managers may reach out to you too to persuade you to lie for them. I think those that stay with the truth at the end will have a tremendous satisfaction when this all blows up. There will be a time when the boys will be free and I want to see reporters that stood their ground saying “See I told the truth!”.

In a misogynist, totally disgusting written interview with GQ-UK in September 2013, Harry supposedly said he is not bisexual (causing the author of said interview to [wrongly, imo] assume Harry is straight). We didn’t hear these words directly from Harry, though, so there’s no way to know whether that’s true or not.

I am a heterosexual long-married woman with grown up children. I too stumbled across the 1D phenomenon towards the end of last year. Was it an accident or were we led there by some subtle social media seeding targeted at older music lovers with eclectic tastes? I had dismissed 1D as a manufactured ‘boyband’ and was not familiar with their music. I loved the single ‘Perfect’ and thought it a first class example of upbeat and uplifting pop genre akin and I was surprised to learn it had been written by Harry and Louis. Pop music is as replete with snooty aficionados as the operatic fandom. People forget the point of music sometimes. It is to feed the soul I find 1D music uplifting and glorious and sometimes beautifully poignant and moving. The same could be said of Verdi,s Requiem. I hope all the boys reflect on their time together, replay all the videos from their early days and that Harry and Louis can find their way back to the beautiful friendship they once shared-whatever it was.

Lke a true conspiracy theorist, it seems you censor opposing views? That’s what the Larry fans do too and it’s why that section is so insular, most of them don’t even realise their ‘evidence’ has been disproven because the fandom is run and censored by large blogs usually run by manipulative adults who seem to enjoy the power trip of kids believing them. Please don’t think there’s any critical thinking or seeing through management bullshit happening with these people. It’s pure fantasy

Firstly I never have and never will censor anything on this site. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Syco and MM are manipulative and that 1D have a manufactured image that bears no relation to what they are really like as individuals.

As I have said above and elsewhere I approach every story with an open mind. Whilst I respect your opinion and your right to state it the way you dismiss any view other than your own indicates that you have a closed mind.

I mean everything from the Larry side of the fandom has been comprehesively debunked. The idea that management is forcing them into the closet against their will is a conspiracy theory. You’re not actually writing articles with an open mind, you’re coming at them from a biased perspective because you’ve been taken in by larries. Larries are highly manipulative in the way they present their ‘evidence’ and it’s usually quite easy to see through. I’m surprised someone like yourself wouldn’t know better? Please understand most/all fandoms involving attractive men have these ‘closetted love story , management control theories’. Some take it to even further extremes than the 1d fandom. Perhaps a more interesting thing to investigate would be why fans feel the need to do this in the first place. Don’t ever think you’re supporting the boys by writing what you do. They’re not ‘trapped’ and I don’t think they appreciate the unnecessary speculation on their sexualities or their relationships. You certainly have no place to discuss the validity of any if their relationships with women so please sit down until you regain your common sense. To anyone with a working brain your articles come of as foolish and misled at best.

My articles aim to present 1D in a positive light. I would love you to find a single word in any of them that claims “Larry is real.” Whilst on a personal level I think it may well be, on a professional level I have never said so.

I don’t mean to be rude when I say this, but you don’t seem too open yourself so I wonder why you feel the need to call someone out on not being open, especially when, to me, it is obvious they are just that; open? Louis and Harry sexuality is not matter whatever their gay or not it will not matter that much as long as they are free to be with whomever they want without hiding it that what matter.. i’m so angry also about the negative media about Louis he seems very good person who take care of his family and hard working artist i really hope Louis will be free from all this stressful issues.

Great to know a little bit more about where you’re coming from, Alan. I’m a bit like you – a massive MASSIVE music fan (more Indie/Rock/Alternative) for many decades and began to enjoy 1D simply because their music was “cute” (at first). Never in my wildest dreams did I expect that I would become a VOCAL advocate for equal rights (I was always a supporter but never “out there”) and for the rights of celebs too, to just live their lives when they are not performing.

I saw what was being done to Harry and Louis and was genuinely appalled that anyone could treat two such lovely boys in such a horrible way. I still think that today, 4 years later. It is as obvious to me as the nose on my face that they love each other very much (in what capacity? I’m not sure, I choose to believe it’s romantically) and that their interactions were squashed for absolutely no reason other than the PERCEPTION that certain sections of markets would object to their relationship.

Then, of course, their music grew and so did my love for them. Midnight Memories saw me through a very rough patch in my life with songs like Strong and Happily and Through The Dark. And then came the absolute pop powerhouses of Four and MITAM, the latter being one of the best albums I own out of my hundreds of vinyl/CD/digital albums. (I’m jealous of your 10 000!!!! How do you store them all!? lol)

In short, I think that 1D as a band are spectacular. I’m 1DAF through and through. I also think that Harry and Louis might be two of the strongest, most patient, most loving men on the planet and I believe that (one day soon) they will be free and the whole world will see them shine like supernovas 🙂

Thankyou for explaining your history and your beliefs – there are so many believers who are highly educated/older fans/very wise beyond their years that it seems highly unlikely that we could be wrong. All we want is for them to be HAPPY, stop the bullshit press and character assassination and let them blossom like the beautiful flowers they were always meant to be 🙂

I think we sing from the same songsheet. I grew up In Northern ireland during the worst of ‘the troubles’ so through my adult life I have taken the position that hate is just a waste of time. as the old saying goes “different folks for Different folks”

I just take a leaf out of lovely Harry’s book and try to remember to be positive and understanding. How he manages to do that in the face of what he’s endured is a marvel – or maybe it’s BECAUSE of what he’s endured? Those trying times can make or break us, as you said of your time in Northern Ireland. Luckily they’ve “made” both you AND Harry 🙂

I can’t believe that a middle aged music “journalist” has been brainwashed by the Larries!
How can Louis be gay when he has a baby on the way? What’s your basis for sayIng that Lounielle is fake? You say that you are particularly disgusted by the media’s treatment of Louis and here you are proclaiming that Louis is gay without factual basis. That’s even worse!

I have never stated an view (other than here today) that Louis is gay. I think I make it pretty clear that I don’t actually care either way. I believe Lounielle is fake for a host of reasons, chiefly because there is no evidence either way other than Lounielle fan account that is 2 weeks old and just happened to be in the right place at the right time to grab the kiss photo. How odd! If you think it is a real romance I would be willing to bet you that by mid february we will see the “Lounielle break-up story” just as we have every other winter girl-friend story. I have not been brainwashed by anyone.

I am totally open to either train of thought.

“How can Louis be gay when he has a baby on the way?” Is this a serious question? There are hundreds of thousands of gay men who have children and as you are probably aware there is considerable doubt as to whether the whole bay thing is true or not. I guess we will know soon enough
