Bournemouth Night Lights

Bournemouth Night Shoot Fun

Last night I went into Bournemouth Town centre where they have a Christmas market and had a little fun shooting lights, traffic trails and night scenes.

These were all long exposure and I like the effects I was able to achieve.  I would love to hear your thoughts.

The Darkness Christmas song

The Return Of The Christmas Record: Blessing or Curse?

Evil music industry trolls, most notably Simon Cowell,  killed off that most British of traditions – the Christmas Single – with their sickly singing competition winners.

The X-Factor spawned the Christmas No 1 year in and year out and as time went on bands simply stopped making Christmas themed records.  It seemed that we were forever damned to be bombarded with Slade’s Merry Christmas Everyone and Mud’s Lonely This Christmas for the rest of our lives.

If announcements this week are anything to go by It seems that the Christmas single may well be back, at least in the UK.  First up The Darkness are on a mission to take back Christmas from the X-Factor.

The lineage of Christmas songfoolery has included many greats, and The Darkness’ legendary 2003 single ‘Christmas Time (Don’t Let The Bell’s End), put the band firmly in the frame as a Christmas staple, alongside stuffing and unacceptable jumpers. The Darkness have now taken the long-overdue fightback into their own hands and have recorded a brand new song for your yuletide delight.  ‘I AM SANTA’ is a jingle fest in their own inimitable style and is released (of course) on Christmas Day.

The super-festive video for the single was recorded in Los Angeles while the band were on tour in October. The Darkness borrowed a time machine off of the Back To The Future people in order to make the video in the 1980s, and bought up the ENTIRE stock of fake snow from Hollywood’s special effects dealers. There is a special prize if you can spot the celebrity disguised as a cheerful Santa figurine!   Look here:

To celebrate the fightback The Darkness have even rereleased their  latest album ‘Last Of Our Kind’ with 4 new tracks: ‘Messenger’, ‘Always Had The Blues’, ‘Million Dollar Strong’ and ‘I AM SANTA’.

Following hot on the heels of The Darkness Xtra Mile label mates beans on Toast and Skinny Lister have teamed up for their own somewhat cheesy Christmas song, “This Christmas.”

All proceeds from the single are to be donated to homeless charity Shelter.

Merry Christmas To All Of My Friends And Family

I can’t believe it is almost years end already.  I just wanted to wish everyone a very merry, peaceful and happy Christmas. I hope each and every one of you gets to spend some quality time with friends, family and loved ones.  I took a little walk around my neighbourhood this evening and took a few photographs.  I hope you enjoy them.

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Getting Seasonal.”

At the risk of sounding like Mr E Scrooge I shall start by saying that I am not usually a big fan of Christmas.  I dislike being force fed a diet of how it is the most wonderful time of the year, how everything should be perfect and the struggle to try to find the perfect gifts for people in overcrowded shops.  The stress of trying to create the perfect meal on Christmas day and so on.  I also detest the fact that these days Christmas is more about how much shops and retailers can get you to spend than it is about a religious holiday.

This year however things are different.  Tomorrow my wife and I are off to a little one day festival.  Eight live bands over 12 hours in a heated marquee, a range of cask ales and over 30 ciders on offer 🙂 .

On Tuesday my wife leaves her job ready to have three weeks of before taking on a new challenge in the New Year.  On Christmas Day we are going to visit my sister so no cooking to do.  On New Years Eve we are going to my other sisters, again no stress or no cooking to do.  In short all the pressure is off us this year and that is why I am looking forward to christmas for the first time in years 🙂

Merry Christmas and a very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year to all of you.

Christmas At Risk: Santa Claus Blames A Lack Of Qualified Labour

In a huge scoop for the Sound of Summer blog reporter Alan Ewart was last night flown to the North Pole to interview Santa Claus.  Alan was flown to Santa’s secret North Pole base by Reindeer Express.  In a first for the Blog Santa told our reporter that he was deeply concerned for the future of Christmas.

Santa said

“There are a number of things causing me concern this Christmas but my biggest worry is the difficulty in attracting suitably qualified elves to make the toys.  Elves seem to be unhappy that I can only offer seasonal work”.

Santa went on to say

“Some of my reindeer are getting old and are close to retirement.  Flying reindeer are not easy to find and it seems that some young reindeer simply don’t want to undertake the hard physical labour that pulling a flying sleigh full of toys for all the worlds children requires.”

Santa Claus said that he had seen in The Guardian that traditional toys like dolls of characters from the hit movie ‘Frozen‘ were likely to be in very high demand.  Santa did say that he was concerned that many children were asking for technology based presents like Apple’s  iPhone or iPad that were being produced cheaply in Chinese factories.  Santa said that he could not compete with these vast factories that seemed to have a never ending supply of cheap labour.

Santa did say that the decisions taken in some countries to cancel their Christmas celebrations to help to control the spread of disease would mean that there would be a reduction in demand for some toys.  Santa went on to say that he understood the necessity for these measures but he felt very sorry for the children affected.

Whilst at Santa’s North Pole base our reporter also managed to grab a few minutes with Mrs Claus, Santa’s wife.  When asked how Santa managed to keep the reindeer flying so fast for so long Mrs Claus said

“Throughout the year we feed our reindeer on a special diet of whole grain foods.  This keeps them in tip-top condition.  At the beginning of December their food is supplemented by a specially developed magical ingredient, this gives them a huge amount of energy, enough to help them to ensure that all deliveries are made on time.”

Santa finished the interview by saying that he believed that he would be able to deliver a normal Christmas service this year but to ensure that he could meet future demand he needed to recruit suitably skilled elves and more reindeer.  Santa said, I can offer great working conditions, good rates of pay and an excellent holiday package.  If you are an elf interested in working for Santa you can apply by sending you CV to media_elf@emailSanta.com or by sending a copy addressed to Santa Claus, Santa’s Grotto, Reindeerland, XM4 5HQ
